Like vs As

‘Like’ and ‘as’ can be used as prepositions or conjunctions to compare and connect things. To talk about similarities, we use ‘like’. To talk about a role or purpose, we use ‘as’.

Lesson Plan

Introduce ‘like’ and ‘as’ by reviewing the grammar rules and watching the supplementary video. Discuss similies with the class. Similies are a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind. They are used to make a description more vivid.

Complete the ‘similies’ activity page - match each similie to its definition. Discuss each meaning. Ask students to use the similies to write three sentences of their own.

Complete the sentences for reinforcement.
